Williston to begin restoration efforts on Sucker Brook Tributary

The Town of Williston has been granted an additional $40,000 in Clean Water Act Section 319 funds and $5,000 in Lake Champlain Basin Program funds to design and implement stabilization measures for a severely eroded section of a tributary of the Sucker Brook located along Route 2A south of I-89.

A $28,500 grant was previously awarded from the Clean Water Act Section 319 to fund technical assessment and installation of two stone weirs to halt the upstream progression of the uppermost headcuts. The weirs were installed last summer, and additional stabilization measures are anticipated this coming summer.

The erosion in this stream channel began in 1984 when a severe rainstorm caused the stream to jump its banks and enter an old gravel pit. The pit collapsed, and a large canyon has since been formed with erosion occurring along approximately 1/4 mile of stream.

On April 22, 2004 from 7-9PM the Town of Williston will host an informational meeting about the project. Representatives from the Town of Williston and the State of Vermont will be there, as will representatives from DuBois & King, the selected design consultants. The purpose of this meeting is to present preliminary alternative designs for the stabilization work and to solicit input about potential designs from property owners along the brook and from the general public.

Grant money will be used to fund the design and implementation of stabilization measures for the severely eroded canyon area along the waterway. Doing so will significantly reduce erosion and the associated downstream sedimentation. Habitat and water quality will also improve markedly. The Town has partnered with the Vermont River Management Program, the University of Vermont, Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council, and the Vermont Geological Survey on this project. Other state and federal agencies have also provided support to the effort. Additional water filtration 'News'and to compare the various technologies, see benefits of drinking water.
