Coca Cola is planning a heavy campaign to support the UK launch of a bottled water brand
Water UK admires good marketing, but it shouldn't include misleading suggestions about health.
- Drinking 7 or 8 glasses of water a day is recommended for good health
- At less than one tenth of a penny a litre, the price of tap water is right
- Don’t fall for subtle ‘bottled water is healthier’ messages
- Responsible mineral water suppliers don’t make comparisons on health grounds.
More and more people are aware that drinking water is good for them. The message is coming from family and friends, doctors and nutritionists, newspapers and magazines. And they’re finding that a good intake of water makes them look and feel better.
So it’s excellent news that in the UK we have some of the highest quality tap water in the world and a successful bottled water industry.
The choice between different kinds of water is less important than drinking enough. There is room for different drinking occasions and different styles of water.
Water UK has no argument with bottled water companies in their promotion of lifestyle, convenience, taste or refreshment. Good water will do you good whoever supplies it. But it would be wrong to promote bottled water on grounds of superior health quality.
To do this, even by subtle suggestion, is irresponsible. No one should feel that drinking tap water is second best. Or that they have to pay a lot of money for a vital ingredient of good health.
