Brits trust Changing Rooms more than friends when designing their kitchens

According to a report issued today by Brita Water Filters to find out what our kitchens say about us, one in sixteen cites TV makeover programmes as their main style influence while a remote one in fifty would turn to their friends first for style advice.

In conjunction with social environment psychologist Dr. David Co well, Brita’s report looks at messages we send out about ourselves through the
way we design our kitchens. Findings include:

From outhouse to hub of the house… The kitchen is now more popular than the dining room with 34% spending most time there compared to just 5% in the dining room

If you can’t stand the heat, do something else! Half of us use the kitchen to entertain guests while one in three also use it as a workspace

Traditional white descends the style-ometer: Almost two thirds want chrome and graphite accessories in their kitchen, compared to just 10% opting for white

The younger we are, the less fussy we want our kitchens: 82% of those with minimalist kitchens are aged 18 – 40

We are leading tidier lifestyles: the most popular kitchens styles Avant-garde, Minimalist and Functional all symbolise organisation and resourcefulness

We have an unsettled view of the future - only one in ten decorate their kitchens in yellow which is the colour of future and positivity

Stress is the last thing we want in our kitchens. Almost a third of us decorate our kitchens in earthy tones (browns, beiges, burnt reds) which promote easiness and relaxation

The report has been produced to demonstrate the role that kitchens play in our daily lives and to highlight the messages that are conveyed to our visitors through style, décor and the accessories we choose.

Dr. David Cowell said; “Many people are unaware of the fact their kitchens can speak volumes about their personalities, even giving away clues that might be better concealed like a lack of confidence about the future or a subconscious desire to start a family. Most household activities these days take place in the kitchen so it is an ideal place to look for clues about the owner who has put personal feeling and choice into its style and decoration.”

David Openshaw, product manager for Brita said; “Style has become as important as functionality in today’s kitchens and a major trend highlighted in the report is a desire for high quality chrome and graphite products. The recent introduction of Atlantis Graphite aims to cater for those who want the benefit of a larger capacity, countertop water filter jug in this currently stylish colour.”
