Rhode Island’s best-tasting waters!
The Harrisville Fire District Water Department and the North Kingstown
Department of Water Supply, were judged to have Rhode Island’s best-tasting water at Atlantic
States Rural Water & Wastewater Association’s Drinking Water Taste Test, held at the Radisson
Airport Hotel, Warwick. Harrisville captured the “disinfected division,” while North Kingstown
pulled down honors in the “non-disinfected division” (water without chlorine). In the Taste-Off
Competition between the two winners, Harrisville was the Grand Winner and its water will be
entered in the National Rural Water Association National Drinking Water Taste Test in
Washington, D.C., on May 23rd.
Water from 14 community supplies in Rhode Island was judged on taste, clarity, and aroma.
Judges were Johnson & Wales Executive Chef, Rob Joyce; Wright-Pierce Engineers Marketing
Director, Jennifer Flanagan; and Woodard & Curran Engineers VP, Leroy Kendricks.
In accepting the award, North Kingstown Water Quality Specialist, Susan Licardi, said “North
Kingstown has always been proud of the water we supply. The Town has worked hard to protect
our resource.” Upon learning of the award, Harrisville Fire District Chairman, Donald Mehrtens,
said “This proves that efforts made to improve the Town water system by Superintendent James
McCormick are paying off, not only in the taste, but in the quality of the water itself.”
The Taste Test is run in conjunction with Atlantic States Rural Water & Wastewater
Association’s annual technical conference. The association is a non-profit organization,
providing training and technical assistance to water and wastewater systems. According to
Executive Director, Steven Levy, “These communities should be proud of their water and the
capable people who work for them. This is a clear reflection of their skill and nature’s blessings.
They truly have Quality On Tap!
