Tenergy water upgrades high tech company’s 30-year old water system

When the time came for UTC Fuel Cells of South Windsor, Connecticut to replace their existing, 30-year old water system, the company turned to Tenergy Water of New Britain to custom design an environmentally-friendly, state-of-the-art Deionization (DI) Water System that included a high-efficiency option to reduce their wastewater volume by 30 percent, provide process cost-savings, and maintain a pressure level required for the sophisticated work of UTC Fuel Cell’s high tech lab equipment.

UTC Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX), is a leader in fuel cell production and development for commercial, transportation, residential and space applications. UTC Fuel Cells’ ongoing growth established that the current water system could no longer meet the demands of their present and future operations. As a result, UTC Fuel Cells enlisted the expertise of Tenergy Water to custom design a new water system.

“Our DI System will reduce UTC Fuel Cells’ wastewater volume, provide process cost savings, and deliver the precise amount of ultrapure water at the high pressure at which their laboratory equipment operates. We delivered and installed a custom-designed unit that is sized to meet UTC Fuel Cells’ current and projected water usage demands,” said Mr. Dale Langefels, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Tenergy Water.

Tenergy Water custom-designed a new system that is less labor-intensive and will have the capability to perform a hot water regeneration, which will improve the resin life and run time by more effectively removing silica from the system. The regeneration process also uses a rinse recirculation pumping system to reduce the regenerate waste by 30 percent.

Tenergy Water’s solution includes a Make-Up System and Distribution System. Tenergy’s DI System design includes an activated carbon filter; duplex mixed-bed DI; DI regeneration system; neutralization system; a DI water storage tank; and duplex distribution pumps with variable frequency drive (VFD).
