New water supply for Lanarkshire villages

SCOTTISH Water has completed work on a project to improve the water supply to two South Lanarkshire villages.

Around £500,000 has been spent to bring a completely new and improved drinking water supply for around 300 people in Dolphinton and Elsrickle.

The scheme was carried out in order to bring a new supply from the Roseberry Water Treatment Works in Midlothian, via the new Carlops Service Reservoir. The old Dolphinton and Elsrickle Water Treatment Works are being closed as part of the scheme.

The new system is now in place and the supply is starting to be introduced in stages this week to around 207 customers in Dolphinton and 97 in Elsrickle.

Dolphinton will be supplied by a gravity fed system, while the water will be relayed to Elsrickle though new booster pumps. A new mains system has been installed between the villages to work in conjunction with part of the existing network.

Project manager Mike Gilmour said: "This scheme has been designed to bring a better quality drinking water supply to our customers in these communities.

"The old works were no longer compliant with recent European directives and with the introduction of this new supply, our customers in Dolphinton and Elsrickle should see an improvement in the quality of the water coming out of their taps.

He explained: "As this is a new system of mains and links, the supply is generally introduced in stages to ensure that the infrastructure can cope with the increase in pressure. The supply here will be brought in over the next few weeks and will be closely monitored to ensure a smooth transfer to the new system."
